Pressure Washing Deck For Cleaning or Prepping
It’s nice to have an outdoor area of your home when you can relax on a lounge chair, have a barbecue or swing on a porch swing and a deck is perfect for all of these things. A wooden deck attached to your home can also add a beautiful, natural appearance as well as a leisurely place to rest.
Over time, however, that beautiful wooden deck can start to look a bit run down. Being out in the elements the wood is subject to all types of weather. It takes a beating from moisture, extreme temperatures, frost and anything else nature throws at it. This can all leave it looking less than beautiful. It may take on a gray appearance as the stain wears off over time.
There are a few things you can do to improve the appearance of your deck. If the wood is damaged or the stain is completely gone, you will probably want to restore it. Otherwise, you can pressure wash deck to clean away any mold and mildew dirt and sludge and other substances that are keeping your deck’s beauty from coming through.
Pressure washing deck wood is a simple solution to a like-new appearance. However, it must be done properly to avoid damaging the wood. There are a few things that can go wrong, leaving you with a deck that is even less beautiful than when you started the cleaning project.
Because pressure washing uses high pressure water, the level of pressure is important to consider. Using a pressure stream that is too high can actually cause damage to the wood and leave marks. This is why you need to be sure to find out what psi to use on your deck and use a sweeping motion, not stopping and letting the stream stay in one area. You might also consider using a lower psi and going over the whole thing more than once.
Another thing that can cause damage to the wood of your deck is cleaning solutions. Of course using harsh chemicals such as bleach can stain and streak your wood. You need a gentle cleaner. There are many such cleaners that are also biodegradable and ecologically friendly that will do a great job on your wood.
If just pressure washing your deck doesn’t bring the results you are looking for, once it is clean and has dried for a couple of days, you can reseal the wood and then stain it the shade of your choice. At this point you will certainly have a new looking deck. The fact of having cleaned the wood thoroughly beforehand will allow the sealant to get to all the necessary places and really leave your wood to be stained to perfection.
